Dear students,
In class today you learned about the history of Veterans Day. Here are some questions:
1. What did you learn about Veterans Day?
2.. Do you have a similar holiday in your country?
3. Military service is now voluntary; there used to be a draft. Which way is it in your country? Is military service mandatory or voluntary?
4.. Which do you think it should be? Why?

According to the class, I have known something about the Veterans Day. Like every November 11 Americans will celebrate the Veterans Day in order to honor the people who have served in the armed forces. In addition, in the beginning the day has another name was called armistice Day because it comes from the World War one. And it also changed the day to the October in order to have a long weekend. Then, in 1975 it changed back to the November.
ReplyDeleteThen, I feel very sorry to say that we don't have a similar festival for veterans. And China's military service system is divided into two parts: one is called conscription and it is mandatory, another one is called voluntary enlistment,obviously, it is voluntary.
At last, in my view, I think military service should be mandatory. Because as a country, we need to ensure that we have enough soldiers to prepare for war. While, military service also help people to exercise their body and is good for people's physical quality.

A day which is celebrated in the honor of all those people who served their services in Military & Armed Forces. It was started in June,1919 when the all Allied Nations and Germany made a written agreement in France. It was 11th hour, 11th day of 11th month.
This day is also celebrated in USA & many other countries on November 11. In 1975 in USA this day was announced as veterans day and national holiday.
Answer to Question no2
In my country, Veterans Day is also celebrated on November 11, where all force demonstrating different colorful activities including parade,guard of Honor,air show and tribulations to all army and military soldiers.
Answer to Question no3
I think it should be volunteer because ever body has right to choose or not. In many countries it is volunteer but few countries there is mandatory. It depends on those countries need and strength. In my country it is volunteerly.
Answer to Question no4
I think people should have right to join the army or not. If we make it mandatory it will make people irritative and panic. But I know every country needs to have army who can save that country and could do something special in serious condition s like disasters, floods, earthquake etc..
Wow, men do not have to go military service in your country.

ReplyDeleteThe Veterans Day is the day, is an American celebration in which people commemorates the military’s from the armed forces for they services, it also mark the anniversary of the end of the World War I, when Germany and the world formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th Day of the 11th Month of 1918.
Even the original date its November 11th, for 8 years since 1971, accordance with the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, the Veterans Day was moved to every fourth Monday of October, but in 1978, it was moved back to his original date.
2. Do you have a similar holiday in your country?
In Colombia we do not have a Holiday like the Veterans Day, but we have a holiday call the Battle of Boyacá, which resulted in the independence of Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador and Panama (New Granada), from the Spain Monarchy. So we commemorate the battle, the victory that Simon Bolivar gives us, and all the people how flight in the battle for our country.
But what we have is a memorial for the Fallen like a tribute to the members of the Military Forces who have lost their lives in the internal armed conflict in Colombia.
3. Military service is now voluntary; there used to be a draft. Which way is it in your country? Is military service mandatory or voluntary?
The Military service in Colombia It is mandatory for men of legal age (18 years) who have finished school and are not registered in the university, all must present themselves to the military battalion and show evidence, if not the case they must provide the service for 18 months, or buy their military notebook Which the price owes to the income and property of the family.
For women it is an option, they can provide the service if they so desire.
4. Which do you think it should be? Why?
I think it depends on each country and how they form and present military service, there are countries that do not need it or it is not so important, and there are others that is very much part of their culture, but in my opinion, I would like it to be an Option and not an obligation.
I feel that forcing someone is not the best way to do things, there are people in Colombia who have no choice, because they do not have money and it's their duty to give themselves to military service, it does not seem fair to me that people who do have the money, just buy the military notebook and they are good.
I believe that more than an obligation, it has to be a right of my own, whether or not I want to join the military service, there are people who will not want as there are people who do.

ReplyDeleteThe celebration began on November 11, 1918, in commemoration of the ending of World War 1. In fact, the armistice was signed at 11:00 am, on November 11 (the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11 month) and now is a National Holiday in North America. The purpose is to honor and recognize all of those who have served the country whether living or dead. Also, in 1968 Congress decided to move it to October. But in 1975 they decided to return it to the original day. Also, there is a parade for the celebration.
2. Do you have a similar holiday in your country?
No, we don’t. We have a day to commemorate the army but not the soldiers and Veterans. We are a peaceful country.
3. Military service is now voluntary; there used to be a draft. Which way is it in your country?
In Mexico it is voluntary to participate in Military.
Is military service mandatory or voluntary? It is voluntary.
4. Which do you think it should be? It should be voluntary always. Why? Because military actions against another country have never been resolved by violent actions, which is why dialog and communication exist. We are living in a determined point in the world, and if we continue attacking, we will extinguish humanity.
Agree, never should be mandatory, is like forcing people to do something that they don't like. And when the people take this military service the most part of this time they have to go away and this mean that they have to go away from their families, that's horrible even for the families
DeleteVeterans Day is a public holiday in the United States. It is on 11 November. It honors for military veterans who served for US Army. Memorial Day is for the soldiers who died for the country. There are similar Hoildays in Korea and Singapore. And both countries have draft. If you are a man and you don't want to go to military service
ReplyDeletefor 2 or more years, you should go to the jail. Some young men go abroad and never come back for dodging the draft. I really hated shooting because I am a Buddist. I don't like to kill alive animals and lives. If they change military service from mandatory to voluntary, nobody wants to serve in the army. the government should
pay a huge salary for the soldier and people have to pay a lot of taxes for defending their countries.

ReplyDeleteIn our country, we have a similar festival named Army Day. The festival is in August 1. The festival celebrates the foundation of our People's Liberation Army of China.
I think Military service is now voluntary in my country, but in ancient China Military service was draft.
In my point, I really think Military service should be voluntary. There are two reasons. Firstly, Being a soldier has higher danger, so not everyone want to become. Secondly, if Military service become voluntary, it will reduce the cost of a government.

Veterans Day is an official American festival to thank all those who served honorably in the military, originating from The First World War. In 1919, the president of the USA announced that November 11—— the last day of ending the First World war became Armistice Day which was set as a legitimate holiday in 1938. Then it was renamed Veterans Day by authority in 1954. Although there was an altering of festival’s date in 1968, folks celebrated Veterans Day backing to November 11, again in 1975.
2. Do you have a similar holiday in your country?
We do not have this kind of holiday in our country，but we have an anniversary of founding the Chinese people’s liberation army.
3. Military service is now voluntary; there used to be a draft. Which way is it in your country? Is military service mandatory or voluntary?
In my country the Military service now is voluntary. However, every teenager ought to experience the short time of army training (4-14 days)in every stage of the compulsory education and also in the beginning of tertiary-level education.
4. Which do you think it should be? Why?
I harbor the view that military service should be voluntary, because not everyone enables to be a qualified soldier due to the fact that there are majority of individuals who lack physical strength to accept such high intensive training of army. Whereas, experiencing temporary army’s life is beneficial for advancing the sense of discipline among the masses.

I learned that Veterans Day is celebrating since de First World War, when in Germany they choose a day in the eleven day of the eleven month at the eleven hour to stop the war for a minute a keep silence for the warriors and dead soldiers in the battle. That's why Veterans Day is celebrated every November 11th. I also learned that this day the people celebrate the alive and dead soldiers (force armed, military, marines, all of them).
2. We don't have a similar holiday in Colombia.
3. In Colombia the boys need a special license or permission called "libreta militar" (military card) they need to get it when they turn 18 years old, if they don't get this, they have to take the military service mandatory for a specific period. But is voluntary too, so even if they have the military card and they want to take a military service they just apply.
4. I think take a military service should be voluntary because if you don't want to do it, nobody can force you, and I think is a thing that you must to choose if you like it like a career or job, and not like something mandatory.

ReplyDeleteThe Veterans Day is celebrated for the people who served for their country. It starts from First World War. The time is 11th December. Now it is a public holiday for the United States. In my country ,we have a festival day called Army day. This festival is also remembered for the people who serves for the country. The date of the festival is August 1. In our country, people take military service for voluntary. I think the military service should be voluntary. Of course ,taking military service is good for people's health and can practice people's willpower. But in my opinnion,taking military service is not suited for everyone,people should concern their own thoughts of taking military service .
